What is Ayurveda?
Imagine this scenario:
Ayurveda is the Science of Life
The literal translation of Ayurveda is 'the science of life.' But that doesn't give you much context. You may have also heard people say 'it's the sister science of yoga.' But how I like to think of Ayurveda is 'it's the science of how to live well to prevent disease.'
Ayurveda is about optimizing your habits and routines to fit your individual needs so you can be as healthy as possible.
How is Ayurveda Different than Western Medicine?
Western science does a great job at curing acute illness or treating disease but it royally lacks in educating us about how to live to prevent disease. It also doesn't consider the whole.
Western medicine treats us like a bunch of parts, when in reality, we cannot cure a physical aliment without looking at the mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies as well.
Ayurveda looks at the whole person. It is a WHOLEisitic science.
Let's say that we both had a cough and walked into a doctor's office. We are going to walk out with the same prescription and same protocol to get better. Maybe it works or maybe the cough comes back.
Ayurveda on the other hand would look at the qualities of each cough. Is it wet? Is it dry? What was each of these people doing the weeks leading up to the cough? Ayurveda doesn't just give a blanket remedy - it approaches healing from an individualist approach.
You Must Digest Everything in Your Life
Ayurveda is focused on the energetics and qualities of what you are bringing into your life. Not only do we take things into our physical body through our mouth but we also have 4 other senses. Ayurveda teaches us how to bring in balancing experiences through the 5 senses to balance ourselves.
Everyone is an Individual
No two people are the same. Two people can be very similar in qualities but at a core constitution level they are very different and require different things to be healthy.
Ayurveda says the under no circumstances are two people the same. Ayurveda is a science that looks at the individual under a microscope and tailors protocols specific to that person. What I need will not be the same as what you need. My medicine could be your poison.
Ayurveda Heals the Root Cause
While modern medicine is wonderful at treating manifested disease, Ayurveda is a slower medicine that treats the root cause. I know many people who are on prescription medicine, and need it. You will never find me condemning Western medicine. It's saved lives of people that I love.
You can practice Ayurveda and still see a western doctor. You can practice Ayurveda and take prescription medication. You can have both! If anyone tells you otherwise then that's very limited thinking.
Ayurveda Comes From India
Ayurveda was born out of the Indus Valley in India. It has said that it was downloaded by seers, or wise men, during meditation. Once this information came to these seers they then shared it with their village. This happened over 5,000 years ago.
TCM and Greek medicine is said to have it's roots in Ayurveda and that Ayurveda is the oldest science there is. Over the years, and through lineage, these practices have changed. It is said that 'Ayurveda must be presented for the person, place, and time in which is it presented.'
Meaning, Ayurveda can be modernized to fit your lifestyle. This is my approach to holistic wellness. How can I take these teachings and incorporate them every day in a way that feels good and aligned to me.
This is what you will find within my teachings of Ayurveda. Where ancient meets modern.
