What I love about Ayurveda is that once you learn the holistic science you look back on your life and start to connect the dots of how life flows during seasonal changes.
Even at the age of 37, I'm not quite sure if Spring or Fall is my favorite season. I love the transition. I love leaving cold weather and enjoying the sun on my skin. But then again, I love when it gets cool and I can pull on a cozy sweater.
I decided long ago that I don't have to choose. I can simply love both.
Ayurveda and Spring Season
As we begin to transition out of Kapha season (winter) and into Pitta season (summer), you might notice your body and mind beginning to also transition. In Ayurveda, these seasonal transitions are deeply connected to what’s happening inside your body, especially when it comes to detoxification, digestion, and emotional balance.
Kapha Season
Kapha season, which aligns with late winter into early spring, is heavy, slow, damp, and cool. Think, lingering mucus, sluggish digestion, low motivation, brain fog, and that feeling of wanting to stay inside. The bears know it best, it's a time of hibernation. We eat to keep extra lb's on our body for insulation and enjoy heavier foods.
It’s a time when the body naturally accumulates density both physically and emotionally.
And then… things start to thaw. Finally!
As we move into Pitta season (late spring into summer), we shift into a completely different energetic landscape.
Pitta Season & The In-between
Pitta is hot, sharp, intense, and transformative. This is where metabolism increases, digestion strengthens, and the body begins to actively process and clear what Kapha built up.
This in-between phase? It’s where a lot of people feel off and it’s actually incredibly normal. You're leaving behind cold or warm. You're leaving behind heavy for lite. It's completely different energetics so no wonder you physically, mentally, and emotionally are not quite sure what to do.
Clearing Kapha
Physically, one of the biggest things happening right now is the body trying to clear excess Kapha.
All that heaviness and dampness that accumulated over winter starts to melt (literally), and this often shows up as increased mucus, congestion, seasonal allergies, coughing, sinus drainage, or even a lingering cold. It's trying to get up and OUT!
From an Ayurveda perspective, this isn’t your body failing, it’s your body detoxing.
The lungs and sinuses are common sites for Kapha buildup, so as the weather warms and internal heat begins to rise, the body uses that heat to liquefy and eliminate excess mucus. The annoying wet cough or constant throat clearing is the body trying to move stagnation out.
Herbs to Support Kapha Congestion
This is also why herbal support can be so powerful right now. Herbs that gently stimulate, warm, and mobilize—like ginger, turmeric, or even bitters—can help the body do what it’s already trying to do. This is where herbalism really shines by supporting the body’s natural intelligence instead of suppressing it.
You might also notice changes in digestion. Kapha season tends to slow digestion down, leading to feelings of heaviness after meals, bloating, or low appetite. But as Pitta begins to rise, digestive fire (Agni) starts to come back. Hunger increases, metabolism picks up, and the body becomes more efficient at metabolizing.
By incorporating culinary herbs that are dying and heating this will help to restore Agni (digestive fire) and clear any excess Kapha out. Try cooking with cumin, ginger, ajwan, or mustard seeds for the next 4 weeks.
This is also why this seasonal window is often considered one of the most supportive times for a liver and gallbladder detox.
Ayurveda Spring Detox
In Ayurveda, the liver is closely tied to Pitta energy. It governs transformation, metabolism, and the processing of toxins (both physical and emotional). As we move into Pitta season, the liver naturally becomes more active, making it an ideal time to support it with herbs, hydration, and gentle detox practices. In the summertime, the liver can become bogged down from overworking.
A well-formulated liver detox tincture can be incredibly supportive here, especially if it includes herbs that both stimulate bile flow and help the body eliminate waste effectively. In April's tincture inside the Monthly Tea Subscription, we are working with liver and gallbladder herbs such as dandelion root, turmeric, ginger, burdock, and nettle.
The goal isn’t to force detox but to assist what’s already naturally happening.
You may also notice your skin changing during this time. As the liver ramps up its detoxification processes, the skin (another major detox organ) can sometimes become a secondary pathway for elimination. This can look like breakouts, rashes, or increased sensitivity. Again, not a sign that something is wrong but that the body is actively clearing.
Detoxing Kapha Emotions
Emotionally and mentally, this transition can feel just as intense.
Kapha energy tends to hold onto things. It becomes attached. It’s grounding, but it can also feel stagnant. As we move into Pitta season, there’s a natural push toward action, excitement, and forward momentum. But before that transition fully lands, things can feel in limbo.
You might feel more irritable than usual. Or impatient (raising my hand). Or suddenly hyper-aware of what’s not working in your life. This is classic Pitta transformation begins to rise which brings heat, focus, and sometimes a little bit of sassy edge.
At the same time, the emotional “melting” of Kapha can bring things to the surface that have been sitting quietly beneath. Old emotions, unresolved stress, or even just a sense of restlessness can start to bubble up. It's literally melting away and ready for something new. New growth, new life, new patterns.
How to best support yourself? Lean into the change. Kapha wants you to stay stuck and stay the same but don't! You want to try a new hobby or get outside more? Do it! You want to create a new routine or healthy habit but tell yourself 'that's not me.' Don't! Change!!
Herbs for Emotional Balance
From an herbalism perspective, this is also a beautiful time to work with herbs that support both elimination and balance. You don’t want anything too cooling yet (since Kapha still lingers), but you also don’t want to overheat the system as Pitta rises.
This is where formulation matters. Because if you didn't already know, certain herbs are more cooling and others more heating. But that's where I come in and formulate so you never fall out of balance.
A thoughtfully crafted liver detox tincture during this season can help bridge that gap supporting bile flow (helps to breakdown fats), encouraging lymphatic movement, and assisting the body in clearing what it no longer needs. When the liver and gallbladder are supported, digestion improves, skin often clears, and even mood can feel more stable.
Your Body is Nature
And here’s the thing that Ayurveda always brings us back to: this is a seasonal rhythm, not a problem to fix.
Your body is not randomly producing mucus or making you feel off. It’s responding intelligently to a shift in environment, temperature, and internal energy. When we understand that, we can stop fighting it and start supporting it. Just like animals in the wild, you too move with the seasons.
Simple things go a long way right now:
Warm, light, slightly spiced foods to help reduce Kapha.
Bitter and astringent herbs to support liver detox pathways - our next two formulations in the Tea Subscription
Gentle movement to encourage circulation and lymph flow.
Hydration to help the body flush what it’s releasing.
And just as importantly—space.
Space to rest if your body needs it. Space to process what’s coming up emotionally. Space to not rush the transition.
Because as we fully move into Pitta season, things will naturally become clearer, sharper, and more focused. Energy returns, motivation increases, and that heaviness of Kapha lifts.
But this in-between moment? It’s the clearing.
So if you’re coughing a little more, feeling more sensitive, noticing shifts in digestion, or even just feeling “off,' you’re likely right on track.
This is Ayurveda in real time.
And when you meet it with the right support, through herbs, herbalism practices, and gentle liver and gallbladder detox support, you’re not just getting through the season… you’re working with your body in a way that builds resilience long-term.
